Newsflash… Your Attitude Determines Your Altitude!

The title of this article is true! No one will ever rise any higher than his or her attitude toward God, others, life and even themselves as an individual.

Gratitude is the attitude that will elevate a person’s altitude to a new level. As Paul the apostle says, “Give thanks in all circumstances.” (1 Thess. 5:18)

You may be wondering, “What is the payoff of being thankful in all circumstances?”

First, thankful people are happy people. The problem is when people look in the wrong place for happiness. Happiness comes from giving, not receiving. As someone expresses gratitude and gives the gift of encouragement, a remarkable ability comes to that person so they can maintain a positive stance in life. The result: happiness will come!

Second, thankful people are also healthy people. It is amazing to consider that 50-70% of all beds in hospitals are filled with individuals suffering emotional and psychological hurts. There is no way to be physically healthy if one’s attitudes are sick. Attitudes of ingratitude, criticism, cynicism, negativism and doubt impair health. Healthy living starts on the inside with a thankful heart.

Third, thankful people are helpful people. When an individual withdraws into a shell of isolation, depression is not far behind. To view the world in a negative fashion is to soon grow cynical, critical and judgmental. With such a negative disposition will come a long list of gripes and grievances against others and making excuses for our isolation.

A thankful spirit brings us out of ourselves. The only way to keep negative attitudes out is to keep positive attitudes in. Gratitude takes our eyes off ourselves and places them on the needs of others.

You can develop the gratitude attitude by a simple art of obedience. “Give thanks in all circumstances.” (1 Thess. 5:18)
